The Mitchells vs. the Machines is truly a special film, and I’d argue it’s criminally underrated while also being one of the biggest pleasant surprises I’ve experienced.

On paper, the premise isn’t necessarily “new.” Technology/AI takes over the world while a dysfunctional family struggles with their relationships, particularly a father and daughter. But it’s executed so beautifully, with so many other elements that elevate it above similar films.

Sony has always been known for its distinctive animation, but the animation team is on another spectrum here. The vibrancy, creativity, and vast color palette make this film incredibly visually appealing.

The personality this film has is simply riveting. It’s quirky, the comedy is beyond amazing, and the gags, satire, and comedic timing consistently land. Every element adds to the overall enjoyment.

This film lost the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature to Encanto, which is certainly a formidable film. But honestly, The Mitchells vs. the Machines deserved that Oscar and so much more appreciation.

What makes it special is how beautifully it writes the family dynamic while maintaining its originality and flair. Beneath all the comedy and quirkiness is a genuinely beautiful story about a father and daughter that will have you in tears by the end.

Truly an incredible film.
