Supergirl(2026)
The second entry in the DCU has finally arrived, and unfortunately, it didn’t stick the landing. Coming off a solid Superman film, my expectations were modest. I was cautiously optimistic, but I couldn’t help wondering why we’re making a movie about a B-list, derivative character like Supergirl. The source material is strong, but it failed to translate to the screen because of the creative team’s incompetence.
This easily could’ve been an original story or even an origin film. Supergirl isn’t a household name, and most general audiences don’t know her history. The movie only briefly touches on her backstory, which is a shame because those moments were easily the most compelling and memorable parts of the entire film.
Ironically, Kara’s overarching story and personal trauma had the potential to put this movie in the conversation for one of the best comic book films ever made. But no. Wanna know why?
James Gunn hires a fucking juvenile writer with only one short film under her belt to write a $100 million feature film. The dialogue is painfully weak, and the plot inconsistencies are downright laughable. It isn’t Madame Web-level bad, but good lord, some of the dialogue is painfully stale.
To touch on the positives for a moment, even though I don’t think the film captured Kara’s character or tone particularly well, Milly is one hell of an actress. There’s undeniable talent here. The scenes between Kara and Clark were genuinely charming, and I liked where Kara ends up by the end of the film. Even if the journey wasn’t executed well, her arc was satisfying and carried a meaningful theme of self-identity.
Now, back to the negatives.
Director Craig Gillespie tries so hard to emulate James Gunn’s style that the movie ends up feeling like a parody of his films. The superhero paired with a kid? Been there, done that. The villain messing with someone’s dog? Been there, done that.
And I’m so fucking tired of seeing my beloved Kryptonians get nerfed. Is it really that hard to give them a villain who actually pushes them? The comics are filled with worthy opponents.
The only time I genuinely sat up in my seat was when Kara finally locked in during the final minutes… but then they completely undercut the moment with an unnecessary needle drop that sucked all the tension out of it.
I love Momoa, but Lobo is clearly here just for shits and giggles.
Disappointment is an understatement. Milly deserved a better movie.
