Resident Evil (2026)
This film could’ve easily been another throwaway video game adaptation. It has the structure, story, and beats of a traditional horror film, but one thing separates it from the other Resident Evil films…and horror films in general: ZACH CREGGER! This guy is the definition of a filmmaker! He breaks out with Barbarian, follows that up with the Oscar winning Weapons, and now pivots to this.
For context, I’m aware of some of the lore, but I’ve never played Resident Evil or watched any of the previous installments, and I was still completely enthralled. Zach and his team are setting the standard for films like this. The cinematography and sound design are some of the best in the genre. At a tight 90 minutes, the pacing is excellent, with virtually no scene wasted. Every frame feels deliberate and equally terrifying.
Austin Abrams nails the lead role, delivering comedic humor while completely selling the horror. Certain sequences are lit and staged so effectively that I was genuinely scared to see what was around the corner. The praise this film is receiving is well deserved. I also loved the ending simply because it wasn’t predictable or safe. Zach created an interesting world here and absolutely nailed the atmosphere and aesthetic.
