Godzilla Minus Zero (2026)
Director Takashi Yamazaki blew Hollywood away with Godzilla Minus One in 2023, and now the long awaited sequel comes roaring into theaters. But does it hold up? Is it on par with the first one? I’m happy to say it is.
This film does everything a sequel should do. It expands the world, introduces new characters, raises the stakes, and deepens the emotional drama. The screenplay is every bit as good as the first film’s, and Ghidorah’s introduction was so damn good! The battles between Godzilla and Ghidorah rank among the best in the entire Godzilla franchise. Beneath all that spectacle, Yamazaki gives the characters the same care and emotional depth that made the first film hit so hard.
I actually cared about the casualties. Every time one of these monsters tore through a city, it felt devastating. That’s what made the action hit harder for me. I cared about the people caught in the middle of it.
As great as this film is, the pacing does drag when the characters spend so much time strategizing. By the time they put those plans into action, I was more than ready to see them play out. I found both the emotional moments and the monster action more engaging this time around, but the first film had stronger themes and struck a better balance overall. I’d give Minus One the edge, but damn, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
