Clayface (2026)
When this film was announced, I, like many others, raised an eyebrow. Clayface is a C tier Batman villain, so why give him a solo film? Oh boy, do I feel like a schmuck.
This was so FASCINATING! Tom Rhys Harries’ performance as Matt Hagen/Clayface was brilliant on numerous levels. He’s charismatic, terrifying, and oddly sympathetic at times. But that tragedy and sympathy never undermine just how dark this film gets. It gets DARK! The body horror and grotesque imagery were executed even better than I expected.
My only criticism is the conflicting romance subplot, which has promise but occasionally drags down the film’s overall quality. And… that’s it, honestly. I liked or loved the majority of this. Even with a lower budget, the film uses Clayface’s powers so effectively. It doesn’t quite reach the Mount Olympus of comic book films, but it’s one of DC’s best in recent years.
